The Kinley Estimator Role

A candidate for the Estimator position should possess the following minimum qualifications:


  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working within the estimating or project management department of a construction related field.

  • Advanced knowledge of the various disciplines associated with the construction industry – i.e. Civil, Utility, Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, etc.

  • Specialized experience in utility and/ or process piping an asset.

    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction related documents

    • Ability to oversee and delegate portions of the bid process to a junior estimator.

    • Must possess professional and courteous communication skills

    • Proficient in software applications – MS Excel, MS Word, MS Project or P6 and PDF Applications

    • A degree in engineering or construction management an asset but not required.

    • Must be able to travel throughout the US to attend project pre-bid meetings.


  • The Estimator’s Duties consists of the following tasks:

    • Take full responsibility to prepare a bid from receipt of the bid documents to submittal of proposal.

    • Organize and prioritize the bid processes to meet the required bid deadline. Delegate vendor & sub requisitions to junior estimator.

    • Perform material takeoffs of self-performed work activities.

    • Prepare bid packages for subcontractor’s scope of work to obtain sub bids.

    • Input material takeoffs and subcontractor scope into estimate.

    • Evaluate material quotes & sub bids for compliance with contract documents and scope.

    • Input material pricing and subcontractor quotes into estimate. Prepare labor estimates and equipment rental budgets.

    • Prepare preliminary project schedules and qualification proposals for inclusion with bid.

    • Attend pre-bid meetings at project locations and evaluate logistic issues of completing scope of project.
